I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own. What is Therapy?

Everyone needs help now and then. Therapy, or counseling, is a process where you talk to a trained professional to address personal issues, emotional difficulties, or mental health concerns. In our work together, I’ll help you explore and identify your strengths and how to implement them to reduce the influence of the problems you are facing. People who ask for help know when they need it and have the courage to reach out.

How do I know if I need a therapist?

People decide to go to therapy for a variety of reasons including: coping with traumatic events, dealing with the death of a loved one, stress, working on body image, dealing with an eating disorder, navigating major life changes, chronic pain, and much more. Therapy can be beneficial for anyone experiencing emotional or psychological distress, relationship problems, or seeking personal growth.

It’s important to note that therapy is not limited to treating mental illnesses. People seek therapy to enhance their overall well-being, gain insights into their lives, improve relationships, and develop coping skills. The specific reasons for seeking therapy will depend on your unique circumstances and needs.

How do I choose the right therapist for me?

Choosing the right therapist is a crucial step in the therapy process. It’s essential to find a therapist who you feel comfortable with and who can meet your specific needs.

Think about practical considerations such as the therapist’s office location, session times, and the method of therapy (in-person or online).

Read therapist profiles and reviews if available. This can give you insights into their background and what clients have said about their services. If cultural or diversity factors are important to you, look for a therapist who is culturally sensitive and experienced in working with a diverse range of clients.

Many therapists offer a free or low-cost initial consultation. This is an opportunity to ask questions, discuss your needs, and get a sense of the therapist’s approach and personality.

Remember that finding the right therapist may take some time and effort. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t find the perfect fit on your first try. The therapeutic relationship is crucial, so take your time to make an informed decision that suits your needs and goals.
